Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about scales, materials, sizing, and ordering.

What are knife scales?

Knife scales are the handle materials attached to the sides of a full tang knife blank. They're typically sold in matched pairs, shaped to fit the tang outline, then attached with handle pins and epoxy. The word “scales” comes from the historical construction of folding knives, where two thin slabs “scaled” the sides of the frame.

What does stabilized wood mean?

Stabilized wood has been vacuum-infused with resin (typically an acrylic like Cactus Juice) under pressure, then heat-cured. The resin displaces air and moisture from the wood's pores, making the blank harder, more dimensionally stable, and much more resistant to moisture and cracking.

Stabilized scales are usually noticeably heavier than their raw counterparts and have a slight plastic-like sheen before finishing. Once shaped and sanded, they take an oil or wax finish beautifully and hold up well in real working conditions. Browse stabilized knife scales →

Do all woods need to be stabilized?

No. Dense, oily hardwoods — bloodwood, padauk, purpleheart, tigerwood, bubinga, yellowheart — are naturally stable and don't benefit much from the process. The resin can't penetrate the tight grain and oily surface effectively.

Softer, more porous species are where stabilization shines: figured maple, box elder burl, black limba, lacewood, wenge, and any punky or spalted wood. These would be risky to use as raw handles but become rock-solid after stabilizing.

What sizes do you carry?

Most scale pairs are 5 × 2 × 0.25" or 5 × 1.5 × 0.25". The 5" length fits the vast majority of production and custom knife blanks. The 2" width is standard for most chef's knives and hunters; 1.5" suits narrower blades like fillet knives and EDC folders.

Blocks are thicker (typically 1–1.5"+) and are available for makers who want to mill their own scales, turn pens, or use the material for other small projects. Check each listing for exact dimensions.

What is the difference between matched and bookmatched pairs?

Matched pairs are two pieces cut from the same board or the same area of a board. They share the same species, color tone, and general grain character, but the grain patterns are independent — they won't mirror each other.

Bookmatched pairs are consecutive slices from the same board, opened like a book so the cut faces are placed outward. The grain pattern on each piece mirrors the other — creating a symmetrical look on the finished knife. This is especially striking on highly figured species like curly maple, quilted maple, or walnut with wild grain. Shop bookmatched knife scales →

How are scales attached to a knife?

Most makers use a combination of handle pins and epoxy. Drill through-holes in the tang and corresponding holes in the scales, pin with stainless or brass rod, and bed in two-part epoxy. Clamp until cured, then shape and finish.

Some makers use only epoxy on small knives or hidden-tang designs. For exposed tangs, counter-sinking pins flush gives the cleanest look. Mosaic pins are a popular decorative option.

Can I finish stabilized wood?

Yes, and it's easy. Stabilized wood doesn't absorb oil as deeply as raw wood, but a light coat of mineral oil, Tru-Oil, or wax paste gives a nice hand feel and enhances the figure. Most makers sand through 400–800 grit, then apply a few thin coats of their preferred finish.

Raw scales can be oiled, waxed, or finished with film finishes (lacquer, varnish, CA glue). CA (cyanoacrylate) glue finish is popular for raw scales — apply thin coats, cure, sand flat, and buff for a glass-like result.

How do I care for wood scales after installation?

  • Wipe the knife dry after use — don't let water sit on the handle.
  • Never put a wood-handled knife in the dishwasher. The heat and steam will crack and warp any wood.
  • Reapply mineral oil or cutting board wax every few months, or whenever the wood looks dry.
  • Store in a dry location. Extended exposure to humidity will cause movement even in stabilized wood.
