Sapele strikes a good balance between workability and durability. It shapes and drills easily with standard woodworking tools, takes a smooth finish without tear-out, and feels comfortable in the hand — not too heavy, not too light for full-tang knives.
Stabilization & Treatment
Sapele sits in the middle ground. Stabilized pairs are the smarter long-term choice — especially for knives that will see outdoor, kitchen, or high-humidity use. Raw Sapele works well too if you're planning to apply your own oil finish. When in doubt, go stabilized: it won't hurt and will only add durability and peace of mind.
